Romania 2024 100 Lei – Commemorating the 185th Anniversary of Charles I’s Birth

Romania issued a commemorative banknote with a face value of 100 lei on December 1, 2024, to mark the 185th anniversary of the birth of King Carol I (Charles I) of Romania. The commemorative note was released in an edition of 30,000 pieces and is priced at 150 lei (approximately 230 yuan). Carol I was the first king in Romania’s history, born into the House of Hohenzollern in Germany. In 1866, he became the Grand Duke of Romania and led his country to victory in the war for independence. In 1881, he secured Romania’s complete independence from the Ottoman Empire and ascended to the throne as king.

King Carol I of Romania (Carol I), full name Karl Eitel Friedrich Zephyrinus Ludwig von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen (April 20, 1839 — October 10, 1914); the background is a scene from the Romanian War of Independence; in the upper left corner is the coat of arms of Romania; above and to the right in the middle is the emblem of the National Bank of Romania; on the left are the plastic perspective windows , which represent the crown and the Order of the Crown of Romania, a knight’s order established by King Carol I of Romania on March 14, 1881, to commemorate the establishment of the Kingdom of Romania; in the center is the Star of Romania.

In the lower left corner is Castelul Peles (also known as the Peleș Castle), located about 130 kilometers north of Bucharest, the capital of Romania, in the small town of Sinaia on the southern Carpathians. It was once the summer palace of King Carol I and is considered one of the most beautiful castles in the world, known as “Romania’s Neuschwanstein.” In the center is a statue of the king at the entrance to the castle; above it is the Anghel Saligny Bridge, completed in 1895, which spans 4087.95 meters.
